Altai Tavan Bogd Trekking Adventure with Indian Travelers
From 22 June to 1 July 2026, Mongolia Expeditions welcomed a group of 15 travelers from India for a remarkable 10-day trekking tour in Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains, one of Mongolia's most spectacular mountain destinations.
Located in the far west of Mongolia, Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains is renowned for its snow-capped peaks, glaciers, alpine lakes, ancient petroglyphs, and rich nomadic culture. During the expedition, our guests explored the region's most iconic natural and cultural attractions while experiencing the warm hospitality of local people.
The trek began in the breathtaking Khuiten Glacier valley, where towering ice formations and dramatic mountain scenery create one of the most impressive landscapes in Central Asia. The group also visited a hidden aquamarine alpine lake, surrounded by permanent snowfields and rugged granite peaks, before continuing through the picturesque Khar Salaa River Valley and climbing Möst Peak (3,400 m) for panoramic views of the Mongolian Altai.
Another unforgettable destination was Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, home to one of Mongolia's largest concentrations of ancient petroglyphs. Thousands of rock carvings scattered across the mountainsides preserve the history, beliefs, and daily lives of the people who inhabited this region thousands of years ago, making the area both a cultural treasure and a UNESCO-recognized heritage landscape.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, the expedition offered a genuine introduction to Mongolia's nomadic culture. Our guests visited Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic families, learned about their traditional lifestyles, and experienced the hospitality that has defined life on the Mongolian steppe for centuries. Inside traditional gers, they sampled homemade urum (clotted cream), aaruul (dried curds), freshly baked boortsog, and shimiin arkhi, a traditional distilled milk wodka.
One of the highlights of the journey was meeting renowned Kazakh eagle hunter Jenisbek, whose photographs have been published in National Geographic. Guests learned about the centuries-old tradition of hunting with golden eagles, heard stories passed down through generations, and enjoyed the rare opportunity to hold one of these magnificent birds for photographs—an unforgettable cultural experience unique to western Mongolia.
Over the course of the expedition, the group trekked approximately 90 kilometres through glaciers, alpine meadows, mountain valleys, and high passes. Each day followed the natural rhythm of the mountains: crossing icy glacial rivers in the cool morning hours, reaching higher elevations before midday, and returning to camp before the strong afternoon winds swept across the valleys.
Camp life became an important part of the adventure. Our expedition cook, Tugsu, prepared fresh and delicious meals each day, while his dedicated assistants, Nara and Bayasa, ensured every meal was served despite the challenges of cooking in a remote mountain environment.
The logistics of the expedition relied on 12 Bactrian camels accompanied by four experienced camel herders, who transported tents, food, luggage, and expedition equipment across terrain inaccessible to vehicles. This traditional camel-supported trekking style has been practiced in the Mongolian Altai for generations and remains the most reliable way to explore these remote mountain valleys.
Throughout the journey, our experienced trekking guides Aldra and Anu maintained a comfortable pace that allowed everyone to fully appreciate the dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and peaceful wilderness of the Altai Mountains.
This expedition combined everything that makes trekking in Mongolia so extraordinary—glaciers, alpine peaks, pristine rivers, ancient rock art, authentic nomadic culture, eagle hunting traditions, and unforgettable hospitality. More than simply reaching beautiful destinations, the journey created meaningful connections between people, cultures, and one of the world's last truly wild mountain regions.
If you are looking for an authentic Altai Tavan Bogd trekking tour, an unforgettable Mongolia hiking adventure, or a chance to experience the culture of Kazakh and Tuvan nomads, this expedition showcases the very best of western Mongolia.
