Ski Touring in Mongolia’s Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains

Spanish and Andorran ski mountaineers Alex Blasco, Jordi Martinez, and Sebastia Roque Font recently completed an unforgettable ski touring journey in the Mongolian Altai and the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains. During their expedition, they successfully skied from the summits of Naran Peak (3884m), Burged Peak (4068m), and Malchin Peak (4034m), experiencing the remote beauty and wild conditions of western Mongolia.

Although the team encountered unstable weather during much of the expedition, the skies cleared during the final days, creating excellent skiing conditions across the high mountains. This winter brought relatively low snow accumulation to the region, and many of the upper peaks remained heavily covered in ice. However, several snowfalls in early spring helped create favorable snow conditions for skiing and safe descents from the mountains.

The team arrived in Ulaanbaatar on May 6, 2026 where they explored some of the city’s historical landmarks and visited the office of Mongolia Expeditions to discuss the route, local geography, and mountain weather conditions before beginning their adventure. From May 7 to May 20, 2026  they traveled through Ölgii and the Altai Tavan Bogd region, combining ski mountaineering with cultural exploration.

Beyond the mountains, the expedition also offered a deep connection with the nomadic cultures of western Mongolia. In Sagsai soum, they met renowned eagle hunter Baibolat Bugibai and learned about the ancient Kazakh tradition of hunting with golden eagles, including how the birds are trained and cared for. The skiers even had the opportunity to hold the eagles themselves and experience the daily life and hospitality of Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic families.

At the end of the journey, the team described the expedition as an incredible combination of ski adventure, mountain wilderness, and authentic cultural discovery in one of the world’s most remote alpine regions.
