Karakorum Ice Festival 2019
To feel an excitement, competition and adrenaline-pumping experience at once, our ice climbers equipped with ice axes and crampons as their only tools, look forward to the Karakorum Ice Festival that was launched back in 2012, to challenge their speed, skills and endurance for 2 days every year.
The Ice Festival is held annually at Orkhon Waterfall located at the historically important Orkhon valley covering an area of 1220 square kilometers (470 sq.miles) is one of the most important cultural regions in the world and was recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage as cultural landscapes in 2004. The extensive area encompasses the pastureland on both banks of the Orkhon river and includes sites such as Karakorum, the 13th century capital of Chinggis Khan’s Empire.
Orkhon valley is a one of the key tourist destination and on the way there one can enjoy many interesting places including Mongol Els and or Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, Erdene Zuu Monastery at Karakorum, Khujirt village and Tuvkhun Temple. You can as well sleep in Mongolian ger, visit herder family to familiarize yourself with their lifestyle and ride on camel, horse and yak.
This year, the scope of the competition was expanded and named as Karakorum Ice Festival and was held on 08-09 December 2019. This competition is one of the measures that we take to diversify and promote winter tourism products in Mongolia
