"WOLF-2024" was an extraordinary mountain biking tour that took place from August 2 to August 11, 2024, through the breathtaking landscapes of the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains in western Mongolia. The 16-member team was an international mix, including participants from Germany, Chile, Canada, the Netherlands, the USA, Thailand, and Mongolia, reflecting the global appeal of Mongolia's rugged terrain and rich cultural heritage.
The group, led by Aldra and Wolfgang, journeyed through the remote and awe-inspiring Altai region, renowned for its towering peaks, pristine glacial lakes, and vast steppes. Along the way, they immersed themselves in the unique Mongolia-Kazakh nomadic culture, experiencing firsthand the traditional lifestyle that has been preserved for centuries. They visited ger camps, interacted with local nomadic families, and learned about their customs, crafts, and daily life.
A highlight of the tour was visiting an eagle hunter’s family. Participants had the remarkable opportunity to raise a golden eagle on their hands, a rare and powerful experience that connected them with the ancient tradition of eagle hunting, a skill passed down through generations of Kazakh nomads.
Additionally, they explored historical monuments recognized by UNESCO for their cultural significance. These sites, steeped in history, offered a window into the ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region. The participants were able to witness petroglyphs, ancient burial mounds, and other archaeological sites that tell the story of Mongolia's rich and diverse history.
This tour marked Wolfgang's 8th time in Mongolia, a testament to his deep appreciation for the country's landscapes and culture. The tour held special significance as Wolfgang celebrated his 80th birthday during the journey, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Altai mountains and the camaraderie of fellow bikers.
This milestone birthday celebration added a personal and emotional touch to the adventure, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The tour not only showcased the physical challenges and natural beauty of Mongolia but also highlighted the enduring bonds of friendship and shared passion for adventure that transcended borders and generations.
